Authorities refute reports of Leishmaniasis disease in Oman

Muscat: The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has rubbished reports of the emergence of Leishmaniasis disease in the country.
According to officials, the report was published on August 30 and has nothing to do with the Sultanate.
In an online statement, the ministry said, “The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has followed with interest what is being circulated in social media on the issue of the emergence of leishmaniasis. The ministry confirms that this was published on a news site... on August 30, but has nothing to do with the Sultanate.”
Leishmaniasis is caused by the protozoan Leishmania parasites which are transmitted by the bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO).
The disease affects some of the poorest people on earth, and is associated with malnutrition, population displacement, poor housing, a weak immune system and lack of financial resources.
