Three Dollar Dinners And The True Cost Of Food

Roasted Tofu with Vegetable Ragout was the vegetarian entree at this week's $3 dinner at Bloomingfoods.

On today's show, we check out a $3 dinner at our local natural foods co-op--which gets us thinking about the cost of food.

Why is the healthiest food usually the highest priced?

Why is junk food so cheap?

And why are farmers struggling to make ends meet?

We speak with Maggie Sullivan, President of the Board of Directors for Bloomingfoods Co-op here in Bloomington Indiana, and Dee Bohler, Interim General Manager for Bloomingfoods. I wanted to hear more about their new $3 dinner night, which led to a discussion about the true cost of food.

Moving from the supermarket to the farm, we spoke with Tristan Quinn-Thibodeau about agribusiness and the quality and cost of our food. Tristan Quinn-Thibodeau is a National Campaigner at ActionAid USA focusing on biofuels, land rights, and food sovereignty. Action Aid has a couple of short films featuring voices from farmers in Iowa on how farming has changed, and the impact on rural communities, and the environment.

We also take advantage of a fleeting spring blossom, transforming it into a lovely preserve.

Harvest Public Media has a farm bill update and Alex Chambers brings us news on soil tillage and partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
